Obverse: portrait of Italo Calvino. On the left, “1923 2023”, the date of the author’s birth and that of the coin’s issue respectively. Around, “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” and “ITALO CALVINO”.

Reverse: depiction of a scene from Italo Calvino’s 1957 novel “Il Barone Rampante” with the two protagonists, Cosimo and Violante, reproduced in the foreground against a profile of the Ligurian coast and Sanremo in particular, a city which was very dear to the author. On the right, “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome, and the value “5 EURO”, in exergue, the signature of the designer “AVecchio”.
