Since ancient times, the coins have been marked with symbols or letters indicative of the mint of origin.
The coins minted by the Mint of Rome have for centuries been identified by the letter R, initial of the name of the city, a legacy of the late Roman imperial coinage which reported the inscription ROME or the initials R, RM, ROM.
The Mint of Rome, with the unification of Italy, became the national mint; since then, all Italian coins bear the R sign.
In the packaging of the issues of the “Re-edition of the Lira, the letter“ R ”, inserted in a game of circles and lines, recalls the geometric construction of the characters of the Renaissance.
Obverse
